There are a number of common gastrointestinal conditions, disorders and diseases that may cause problems. These include:
Clinical symptoms of lactose intolerance include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence after ingestion of milk or milk-containing products. These symptoms have been attributed to low intestinal lactase levels, which may be due to mucosal injury or, much more commonly, reduced genetic expression of the enzyme lactase-phlorizin hydrolase. The treatment of lactose malabsorption includes reduced dietary lactose intake, substitution of alternative nutrient sources to maintain energy and protein intake, administration of a commercially available enzyme substitute amd maintenance of calcium and vitamin D intake.
